a poem for the hard journeys

Photo by Jake Blucker on Unsplash

cutting the engine makes the night
louder, fuller.
even though i drive i am not
behind this wheel, and i have questions.
now with confusion confessed
this road, turned into an abyss
and i wasn’t blessed
with vision to slice the dark up.
rum and pennies knock together
drumming a clink clink as if to compete
with the midnight.
his song is clear
and his laugh jingles and keys
open the doors
in this wild heart asking

“where to next?”
